For a number of years, Papir has manifested itself on both the Danish and foreign music scene with their changeable and dynamic take on instrumental rock. The band has 6 studio records behind them, as well as the live LP ‘Live at Roadburn’. The recently released ‘Jams’ is a record consisting of selected jams recorded in connection with the band’s latest studio session. ‘Jams’ was released on Stickman Records in April 2021.

Papir is a young three-piece from Copenhagen, Denmark who has played together for years under various names while slowly, but surely, perfecting their unique brand of semi-improvisational psychedelic rock. Based around Christoffer Brøchmanns complex and powerful drumming Papir creates instrumental journeys – organic structures of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can or electric Miles Davis through euphoric peaks, thunderous riffs and beautiful cosmic dronescapes. Nicklas Sørensens guitar playing displays his love for fuzzed-out psychedelic rock from the 1960s and 1970s but also has a highly melodic aspect that reveals his admiration for German heroes Michael Rother and Manuel Göttsching. Similarly Christian Becher Clausen’s bass playing covers a wide palette of ideas and sounds – sometimes using the instrument as a solid groove-maker and other times as a tool for creating spacy soundscapes and drones. As a unit the three members achieve what the great power trios of the 1960s did at their most fertile: the ability to combine each aspect of the band into a whole that surpasses the sum of its parts. The band released their first self-produced record in 2010 on the copenhagen-based record label Red Tape and have since released three full-length albums on El Paraiso Records – the latest one ‘IIII’ in early 2014. All of them recorded, mixed and mastered by Jonas Munk (Causa Sui, Manual) giving the albums a characteristic organic but powerful sound with the full dynamic range intact. The three guys in Papir have also recorded albums with Electric Moon and Øresund Space Collective. Everyone who has been lucky enough to catch the band live know what an reverenceinducing experience their energitic, adventurous explorations can be. Their reputation as an explosive live-band has earned them slots at major European festivals including Roskilde (2012), SPOT (2012) Milhoes de Festa (2013), and Roadburn (2014).
When Mojo writer Kieron Tyler visited Denmark’s renowned SPOT Festival in the summer of 2012 he was blown away by Papir’s performance as an experience that clearly stood out compared to the rest of the bill (that included all of Scnadinavias leading acts): ”It takes a lot to stand out at SPOT…but Copenhagen’s Papir are arresting. Their guitar, bass and drums mesh powerfully in an intense, jazz-inflected instrumental rock. Voyaging through post-rock Tortoise terrain, it nods towards Hawkwind’s freak outs and employs liberal dollops of wah-wah pedal. The pieces – not songs – twist and turn like Dark Star Grateful Dead. From these jumping off points, Papir scurry off on their own path.” The characteristic thing about Papir is how they transform heavy, psychedelic music into something new and relevant, something truly unique. Sure, Papir knows their kraut- and progrock history, but unlike the majority of bands in the present day psych-rock scene they venture far beyond mere pastiche. These guys are certainly on their own path.
